The news the Bucks had expected since the end of the playoffs came on Tuesday: shooting guard John Salmons opted out of the final year of his contract, makin g him an unrestricted free agent. When the free agency negotiating period opens Thursday, Salmons will be able t o discuss contract terms with any NBA team. Salmons declined to exercise the $5.8 million option on the final year of his contract. The Bucks are expected to make a determined effort to re-sign the 6-foot-6 vet eran, who averaged 19.9 points in 30 games with Milwaukee after arriving in a February trade with the Chicago Bulls. The Bucks went 22-8 in those games to clinch an Eastern Conference playoff berth. Newly acquired shooting guard Chris Douglas-Roberts said Tuesday he hopes to be able to play with Salmons. "If we play with each other, I'm going to learn a lot from him and I'm going t o pick his brain," Douglas-Roberts said. "I've seen his progression. I remembe r the days he was playing behind (Allen) Iverson (in Philadelphia). "I will ask him how he handled everything and how he continued to get better. He definitely displayed mental toughness." Salmons has played eight NBA seasons, including the first four with Philadelphia. He signed as a free agent with Sacramento in 2006 and played two-plus seasons with the Kings before being traded to the Bulls. As a member of the Bulls, he averaged 18.1 points in a seven-game playoff series against Boston in 2009.
