But that doesn't necessarily guarantee the veteran forward a spot in the starting lineup. While Maggette is a potent offensive player -- he averaged 19.8 points a game last season for the Warriors -- he is regarded as a mediocre defender, at best. And therein lies the rub. Bucks coach Scott Skiles is a defensive-oriented coach and has exhibited little patience for incompetent defenders. Furthermore, Skiles is a big fan of Carlos Delfino, who started at small forward last season and is a quality defender. In 75 games last season, Delfino averaged 30.4 minutes a game. Only John Salmons, Andrew Bogut and Brandon Jennings averaged more minutes on the team. But can the small-market Bucks afford to pay a backup a starter's salary? Maggette will collect $9.6 million this season, meaning only Michael Redd ($18.3M) and Bogut ($11M) will earn a bigger paycheck on the team. Bucks general manager John Hammond, who acquired Maggette from the Warriors for Charlie Bell and Dan Gadzuric, said it will be Skiles' call on whether Maggette starts or comes off the bench. Hobson, a 6-foot-7 guard from New Mexico, says he’s hopeful he’ll get back to the court before the team finishes summer league play. Milwaukee plays five games, beginning with Dallas on Monday. Hobson is from Las Vegas and says he plans to go regardless of his availability. Milwaukee’s team will leave Sunday and includes its three draft picks—forward Larry Sanders(notes) (15th), Hobson (37th) and forward Tiny Gallon(notes) (47th). Also playing for the Bucks is forward Darnell Jackson(notes), who was picked up late last season and appeared in one game. Sanders will make $1.73 million next season and $1.86 million in 2011-12. The Bucks hold options for the third and fourth seasons that are worth $1.99 million in 2012-13 and $3.06 million in 2013-14. The Bucks took Sanders with the 15th overall pick in the NBA draft. Sanders is a 6-11 power forward who played three seasons for Virginia Commonwealth.
