Dodgers prospect Chen added to World Futures …
LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles Dodgers announced today that minor leaguer Chin-Feng Chen has been added to the World Team as a first baseman for the 2003 Radio Shack All-Star Futures Game, which will be played on July 13 at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago. The fifth-annual contest honors the top prospects in baseball and Chen, who will be making his third appearance on the roster, joins two other Dodger prospects for the seven-inning game.
Chen, 25, is batting .281 with eight homers and 42 RBI in 79 games at Triple-A Las Vegas. The right-hander leads his team with 19 doubles and is tied for the team lead with 45 runs scored. In four minor league seasons entering this year, he had a lifetime batting average of .292 with 85 homers and 365 runs batted in.
On Sept. 9, 2002, Chen became the first Taiwanese player ever to make a Major League roster when he was promoted by the Dodgers. Five days later, he became the first player from his native country to appear in a Major League game when he earned a walk in his first plate appearance. The promotion to the big leagues came after Chen finished the season batting .284 with 26 homers and 84 RBI for the 51s.
Chen, who was named to play in the inaugural Futures Game at Boston's Fenway Park in 1999 and also the 2000 game at Atlanta's Turner Field, is one of 76 players to have reached the big leagues after appearing in the event. He joins a list that includes New York's Alfonso Soriano, Houston's Lance Berkman, Cincinnati's Adam Dunn, Atlanta's Rafael Furcal, Oakland's Barry Zito and Dodger prospect Wilkin Ruan, among others. In seven at-bats during his two previous games, Chen has four hits including a triple
and a RBI.
