(Trenton, NJ)- On Sunday afternoon, the Portland Sea Dogs were down, but they
were far from out. Portland trailed the Trenton Thunder 4-2 after six innings
of play, but two runs in the seventh, and three in the ninth gave the
visitors a 9-5 comeback win at Waterfront Park. Lars Anderson keyed the
comeback with an RBI single, as well as a three-run bomb.
The Sea Dogs got the scoring started right away. Nate Spears led off the game
with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ray Chang, and found his
way home on a double to right-center by Ryan Kalish. The Thunder evened the
score in the bottom of the first on a run by Austin Krum, but Portland
responded, as Juan Apodaca led off the second inning with a home run to right
field.
In the bottom of the third, Trenton took the lead. Austin Krum started the
rally with a walk, moved to second on a balk, and ultimately scored when
Austin Romine doubled to center. Romine didn't stay at second base for very
long, as Brandon Laird knocked him in with a single up the middle. Three
innings later, the Thunder added to their lead, when Marcos Vechionacci
singled home Daniel Brewer, who tripled to right-center.
Jeremy Bleich had a solid start on the mound for the Thunder, allowing two
runs, four hits, and two walks, while striking out two, in five innings.
However, once he and Josh Schmidt were taken out of the game, the Sea Dogs'
bats came to life.
Portland's comeback started in the seventh. Ray Chang and Luis Exposito
reached base with a couple of singles, setting the table for Lars Anderson
and Juan Apodaca. Anderson brought the Sea Dogs within a run with a single to
right, before Apodaca knotted the score with a double down the left field
line. Anderson was thrown out at home plate, but the damage was done.
The score stayed tied until the ninth inning, when the visitors turned a tie
game into a blowout. Ryan Kalish and Luis Exposito each walked to start the
frame, before Lars Anderson cranked a three-run homer to right field, putting
Portland ahead, 7-4. The Sea Dogs weren't done yet, as Nate Spears added to
the offense with a two-run double to right-center, scoring Juan Apodaca and
Che-Hsuan Lin.
Thanks to Spears' double, all nine batters in the Sea Dogs' order picked up
at least one hit, as the team finished with a total of 15.
The Thunder got a run back in the bottom of the ninth, but it wasn't enough,
as Portland finished their series win with a 9-5 victory.
For the second time in the series, the pitchers of record were identical.
Robert Coello (3-1) earned the win for the Sea Dogs, going two innings,
allowing one run, two hits, and one walk, while striking out three. Noel
Castillo (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing five runs in 1/3 of an inning.
With the Trenton series finished, the Sea Dogs will now turn their attention
to a three-game series against the Binghamton Mets. The first game of that
series takes place on Monday night at 6:35. Ryne Miller (0-1, 6.92) will get
the start for Portland, going up against Binghamton's Mike Antonini (2-1,
6.28).
