No heir pressure
Reddick is not the only upper-level prospect in the organization, the Sox
also have Ryan Kalish, Daniel Nava, and Che-Hsuan Lin waiting in the wings.
With J.D. Drew’s contract up after 2011, it’s not a stretch to think the
Sox might have a replacement in the organization. But while Hazen said the
Sox have greater outfield depth than other positions, it wouldn’t be right
to assume one of the prospects is the heir apparent. “We’re not just going
to hand over spots to these young guys before they prove really that they can
do it,’’ Hazen said. “I don’t think the rush is just to hand those jobs
over right away without some competition or without us exploring all other
options as well. I don’t think we’ve ever done that. If at the end of the
day the best option is one of those guys, then we’ll see what happens at
that point.’’ . . . After agreeing to terms with Cuban catcher Adalberto
Ibarra in April, he finally arrived in Florida to start his tenure with the
Gulf Coast League Sox after his contract was finally approved. The
organization hopes to have him go through a quick version of spring training
in the GCL, then head out to a full-season club, though it has not yet been
determined which one. Hazen said he hasn’t seen Ibarra catch much yet, but
has seen his bat, which is impressive. “Having gotten to see him hit, it’s
an advanced bat. This guy has a really, really good swing,’’ Hazen said. As
for his catching, he has “really soft hands, he’s got a really good arm. He
’s got good fundamentals behind the plate.’’
