[新聞]Notes : Ethier, Valdez, Hu stay hot.
By Ken Gurnick / MLB.com
Valdez, Hu? Wilson Betemit (0-for-9) and Matt Kemp (1-for-11), from whom much
is expected, are struggling mightily, while relative unknowns Wilson Valdez
and Chin-lung Hu are in early contention for a Grapefruit League batting
title.
Valdez, a late add to the lineup at second base when Damian Jackson took ill
Tuesday, went 2-for-4 (8-for-16 overall) with a home run and two RBIs and
made a difficult play at third base, where he played one game last year. Hu,
the 23-year-old out of Taiwan, went 3-for-4 and is hitting .444.
Both are natural shortstops. Valdez was the team MVP at Triple-A Las Vegas
last year after being traded the final week of Spring Training from Kansas
City, where he thought he would make the Opening Day roster. Hu is 23 with no
experience beyond Double-A, Valdez is 28 and has had brief Major League
visits with the White Sox, Seattle and San Diego.
Hu is a slick fielder whose ceiling depends on how well he hits. His focus
this spring is to keep the ball on the ground. He will probably play at
Triple-A Las Vegas this year. Valdez is out of options, so he could be lost
to another club if he does not make the Dodgers' Opening Day roster as a
utilityman, a position currently held by the capable Ramon Martinez, who had
a two-run single Tuesday.
