BOSTON — Chien-Ming Wang allowed seven extra-base hits in six innings at
Fenway Park and was an easy winner in Game 1 of yesterday's doubleheader.
Wang (14-5) dodged trouble for six innings, leaving runners stranded in
scoring position four times and giving up only three runs as the Yankees beat
the Red Sox 12-4.
"He's had better stuff before, but he battled," Yankees manager Joe Torre
said.
Wang had been 0-2 with a 6.62 ERA in three career starts at Fenway Park. He
lasted only five innings at Fenway on May 1, giving up three runs in a game
the Yankees lost 7-3.
"I knew about that," Wang said. "But I didn't want to change too much."
Wang did make one major adjustment, however. For the first time this season
he made the slider a regular pitch. Wang usually throws only a fastball and a
sinker.
"You want to give the hitters something else to look at," pitching coach Ron
Guidry said. "For certain hitters in certain situations, it was a good pitch
for him."
Guidry said Wang's sinker is good enough to beat most teams. But the Red Sox
— especially at Fenway Park — presented a unique challenge.
"This was a big game," Wang said.
Phillips out, Beam in: First baseman Jason Phillips was put on the 15-day
disabled list because of a strained muscle on the left side of his rib cage.
Right-hander T.J. Beam was recalled from Columbus.
"It was one of those deals when I felt like I over-swung and I felt it,"
Phillips said. "It's not something so excruciating that I can't stand it.
It's just kind of sore."
Phillips has played in only five games and had six at-bats since the Yankees
acquired Craig Wilson on July 31. The injury could have saved him from being
designated for assignment.
The Yankees have only three position players on their bench — backup catcher
Sal Fasano, outfielder Bernie Williams and infielder Nick Green. Torre said
the team would have added another hitter if not for the doubleheader.
Beam, who has been called up three times this season, pitched the ninth
inning of Game 1 and gave up a run.
Hinske impresses in debut: The Red Sox traded for Eric Hinske on Wednesday
night to add a left-handed bat to their lineup, and the former rookie of the
year paid immediate dividends. He started Game 1 in right field and had three
doubles in his first three at-bats to match a career high.
The former Blue Jay, who said he'd "never been part of anything like this,"
knows life at Fenway won't always be so kind. He even lost Derek Jeter's
ninth-inning pop-up in the sun.
"I'm not going to get three hits every game," he said.
Hinske and second baseman Mark Loretta became the first teammates since 2002
to hit three doubles in the same game.
Big cranky: Red Sox slugger David Ortiz seemed annoyed after he went 0 for 4
during Game 1, only he had something on his mind other than poor at-bats.
On two occasions, Ortiz told reporters to ask manager Terry Francona about
the team's pitching woes.
"Walk into Tito's office and find out what they have in mind," Ortiz said.
Extra bases: The Yankees have signed veteran infielder Frank Menechino to a
minor-league contract. ... Manny Ramirez's RBI single in the first inning of
Game 2 gave him 1,509 RBI for his career. That tied him with Mickey Mantle
for 44th place all-time. ... Game 1 loser Jason Johnson was designated for
assignment by Boston after the game and replaced on the roster by
right-handed reliever Keith Foulke, who had been on the disabled list since
June 12 with a sore elbow. ... Wilson, who hadn't drawn a walk since July 2,
walked in his last at-bat of Game 1 and his first at-bat of Game 2. ... The
Yankees and Red Sox haven't played a five-game series since July 2-5, 1973,
in New York. The Yankees won four games.
Rivalry snapshot: Next time you pull into a parking lot near Yankee Stadium
and part with $13, count your blessings along with your change.
The lots around Fenway Park were charging $50 per car per game yesterday. No,
that didn't include a free tank of gas and a wash.
"The Yankees are in town, so we charge more," said Tom, who was maniacally
waving in cars with an orange flag. "That's the way it is."
In the interest of saving a few dollars, this reporter drove a few blocks
away from the park and found a lot willing to accept $70 for the day. The
proprietor also agreed not to block the car in. Such a bargain couldn't be
passed up.
Randy Johnson is facing Josh Beckett today. Hopefully that big of a game
doesn't require taking out a loan to park.
