Across the field, those souls sitting in the seats beyond the Yankee bullpen were cheering wildly for Joba Chamberlain, who was heading into the game with Rays on first and third, none out and the day still up for grabs. Going from the starter directly to Chamberlain is exactly how the Yankees hoped their plans would go when they deposited Chamberlain in the bullpen at the start of the season. And the Yanks, who had lost two straight to Tampa Bay, reveled in the results, a 2-0 victory before 51,279 at the Stadium. Chamberlain wriggled through the seventh unscathed and threw a 1-2-3 eighth to deliver the ball to Mariano Rivera, who earned his third save. Wang, who did not give up a hit until the fifth inning when Willy Aybar lined a pitch into right, improved to 2-0. "It's easy to enjoy ourselves when Chien-Ming Wang goes out there pitching like he does and Joba coming in and doing his thing and then Mo," Johnny Damon said. There was one thing missing, though - runs, other than Hideki Matsui's two-run homer in the fourth off his personal punching bag, Rays starter James Shields. Matsui, who went 2-for-3 against Tampa's starter, is 6-for-10 (.600) in his career against Shields with three homers and a double. The Yankees are hitting .239 with a .291 on-base percentage and a .367 slugging percentage and have scored 17 runs, a paltry 2.83 per game. "We got enough (Sunday) and that's the big thing," Girardi said. Then he pledged, "This offense is going to break out." The manager was also happy that he felt well enough to do his job - he had missed the previous two games because of an upper respiratory infection. He was still hoarse, but did not suffer too badly in the 46-degree conditions, he said. Wang tossed six-plus scoreless innings, allowing four hits and two walks. He lowered his ERA to 1.38. He used more of his off-speed stuff against the Rays, in part because they have so many lefthanded hitters. He praised his slider and changeup and also said he threw a few split-fingered fastballs, including a plunging one to Carlos Pena that froze him for a third strike in the fourth. In the fifth, the Rays botched a squeeze attempt when Jason Bartlett missed the bunt try and Aybar was easily tagged out by Jorge Posada, helping Wang escape a first-and-third, one-out snare. The scariest moment - until the seventh - for Wang came in the fourth when Girardi and a trainer bolted out of the dugout to examine him. Turns out, Wang simply slipped on the mound and the Yanks just wanted to make sure he wasn't hurt. The Rays started the seventh with singles by Cliff Floyd and Eric Hinske to chase Wang. But Chamberlain came in and started Aybar with a snapping curveball and then a fastball that was clocked at 101 mph on the Stadium scoreboard. Aybar eventually struck out and Shawn Riggans hit a liner that Robinson Cano snared and then threw to first to double off Hinske to end the inning. Chamberlain pumped his fist and later reiterated it was all self-expression and exuberance, not a way to taunt opponents. Chamberlain threw a perfect eighth to set up Rivera's 1-2-3 ninth. "What's not to love about him?" Damon said. "He comes in and then hands the ball to Mariano. I love it, too." Rivera struck out the last two batters of the game, overwhelming B.J. Upton with a 93-mph cutter and then fanning Floyd. The victory evened the Yanks record at 3-3. Girardi said, "You're not playing for a tie, but it's a lot better than 2-4. You want to have positive weeks and it gave us an even week." "It was a great effort by our team," Damon added. "And you know what, we're still not hitting. And that's a good thing, because we will." -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 140.112.115.224
