Wang will start Opening Day for Yanks
Right-hander coming off back-to-back 19-win seasons

TAMPA, Fla. -- Chien-Ming Wang will serve as the Yankees' starter on Opening
Day against the Blue Jays on March 31 at Yankee Stadium, New York manager Joe
Girardi confirmed on Friday.
"He will start Opening Day," Girardi said. "He's earned it. He's won 19 games
the last couple of years, and he's thrown the ball well the last couple of
years. I'm comfortable starting him Opening Day."
Wang, who will be last Opening Day starter in the old Stadium, was in line to
start Opening Day last year for the Yankees before he strained his right
hamstring during a workout in March. The sinkerballing right-hander came back
from the injury to tie a career high in wins for the second straight season,
going 19-7 with a 3.70 ERA in 30 starts. He also established a career high
with 104 strikeouts.
Wang, 28, pitched Friday in a Minor League game against the Rays' Class A
Vero Beach affiliate, throwing 89 pitches. In four Grapefruit League starts,
Wang is 2-1 with an 8.44 ERA in 10 2/3 innings.
