Wang ends Yankees' skid at three games

NEW YORK - It's May, or at least that's what the calendar says. But it was 49
degrees last night when the Yankees started their game against
the Seattle Mariners. A steady wind pointed the American flag straight
toward home plate all evening.
The blue knit caps and heavy jackets the Yankees thought they had put away
until the fall were hauled out of the equipment room and fans formed long
lines at the concession stands, rubbing their hands together until they could
get a cup of coffee.
But Chien-Ming Wang, the oblivious ace of the Yankees, didn't wear long
sleeves under his pinstriped jersey. Even on cold nights, he would rather
his right arm be unencumbered.
"Whatever works for him," manager Joe Girardi said after watching Wang throw
six strong innings in a 5-1 victory before a hardy 52,199 at the Stadium.
The cold led to a cramp in Wang's right hand and knocked him out of the game
after six innings and 90 pitches. But Kyle Farnsworth, Joba Chamberlain and
Mariano Rivera secured the much-needed victory.
As the Yankees broke a three-game losing streak, co-chairperson
Hank Steinbrenner broke 10 days of silence to complain about his 15-16 team.
"I'm very disappointed with the way the season has gone, period," he told the
Associated Press. "We just can't win one out of five games, every time Wang
pitches. It's not going to work. It's not a good win percentage. Starting
pitching is where it's at, especially in the postseason. At this point,
we'll see if we even make the postseason."
With 131 games left, it might be a little early for such sentiment. But
Steinbrenner is right about Wang. He is 6-0 and the Yankees are undefeated
in the seven games he has started.
"I said before the season that he would be even better this year because I
saw all the work he did," Chamberlain said. "Once we scored a couple of runs,
the guys in the bullpen got ready because you know it's going to be a short
night for those guys."
Wang allowed one run on three hits. He walked two and struck out five to join
Arizona's Brandon Webb as baseball's only six-game winners. He is the first
Yankee to start 6-0 since Mike Mussina in 2003.
Wang is 22-6 in his career after a loss. That statistic is more magnified
than ever this season as the Yankees try to survive with Jorge Posada and
Alex Rodriguez on the disabled list.
"I just try and keep the team in the game every time I pitch," Wang said.
"I think the same way for every game."
Facing the Mariners helped. Wang is 7-0 with a 2.39 ERA against Seattle in
seven career starts. He did not allow a run until the sixth inning when
Ichiro Suzuki singled, stole second and third, and scored on a grounder.
"You feel really good when he takes the mound," Girardi said. "He's been a
constant for us. He's so even keeled that you have to make sure his pulse is
still there. But that's what you want in a pitcher."
Wang would have pitched the seventh except for the cramp at the base of his
hand. The discomfort went away once some heat was applied.
Seattle starter Erik Bedard (2-1) allowed one earned run over seven innings
but took the loss as his defense made four errors.
Derek Jeter reached on an error by shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt in the first
inning. He moved to second on a single by Bobby Abreu and scored on a
broken-bat single to left by Hideki Matsui.
Matsui extended his hitting streak to 12 games.
Morgan Ensberg started the second inning by reaching on an error by third
baseman Adrian Beltre, the 2007 Gold Glove winner. On a hit-and-run,
Jose Molina struck out and Ensberg was thrown out at second. But second
baseman Jose Lopez dropped the ball and was charged with an error.
The Yankees took advantage of the mistake as Alberto Gonzalez singled before
Melky Cabrera drove in two runs with a double to left field.
But that was the last hit Bedard would allow. He retired the final 14 batters
he faced, four by strikeout. Bedard allowed four hits over seven innings with
one walk and six strikeouts.
The Yankees scored twice against Seattle's bullpen in the eighth inning.
Abreu and Shelley Duncan had singles off left-hander Ryan Rowland-Smith
before Jason Giambi walked to load the bases.
Right-hander Sean Green was summoned to face Ensberg and allowed an RBI
single to left. Molina's sacrifice fly to center gave the Yankees a four-run
lead.

不過提到一個前幾篇沒看到的:
洋基上一位能拿到6-0的成績的先發是2003年的Moose.
