Yanks take on Oakland
— by Anthony McCarron
Dear Readers, we are about 30 minutes from first pitch here at the
McAfee Coliseum. Here are some tidbits from the pre-game:
‧ Ben Broussard has been released from Triple-A Scranton.
‧The Yankees signed their 4th-round draft pick, shortstop Corban Joseph of
Franklin High School in Tennessee.
‧Hideki Matsui is not playing tonight because Bobby Abreu, who was going
to have the night off, has better numbers against Oakland’s Dana Eveland,
a left-hander. Abreu is 2-for-4 against Eveland.
‧Wilson Betemit is the choice over Shelley Duncan at first because
Joe Girardi likes the way Betemit is swinging the bat lately. “Bet,”
as Girardi called him, has five hits in 24 at-bats since coming off the
disabled list May 26. But he slugged two homers on the last homestand.
‧Girardi has “a feeling” Wang will pitch well tonight. Not to be a cynic,
but I’ll believe it when I see it. Wang has not been good lately – he’s
allowed 27 hits and 24 runs (23 earned) over 23.2 innings in his last four
starts. He has not won since May 2, a span of six starts.
‧Girardi was going to watch Kyle Farnsworth play catch before deciding
whether he was available for tonight’s game. Farnsworth hasn’t pitched
for three straight days because of tenderness in his right biceps.
‧Sounds like it might be August before we see Phil Hughes again. He’s
not playing catch yet – the Yanks won’t clear him until he has a clean
bone scan on his fractured rib. He is slated for the test sometime this
week, Girardi said.
I know it’s a late one tonight, so I’ll try to do some live blogging
to keep you up to date on The Happenings in Oakland.
10:23 p.m.: Well, this one is getting going quickly. Derek Jeter walked
with one out and went to third on a single down the third-base line by
Bobby Abreu. Genius, that Girardi, eh? Alex Rodriguez hit a single to
center to score Jeter, but Abreu was thrown out trying to go to third.
Nice peg by Carlos Gonzalez. Jason Giambi followed with a single to the
left side of the infield – about right where the shortstop would’ve
been standing if they hadn’t had the Giambi Shift on. Oakland starter
Dana Eveland, who has a windup like ex-Yankee David Wells, then walked
Jorge Posada. So he doesn’t have Wells’ control.
Wilson Betemit grounded out to end the inning. Yanks are up, 2-0.
Well, Chien-Ming Wang’s got no excuses about not getting any runs, eh?
11:10 p.m.: We are headed into the bottom of the fourth here in Oak-town
and the Yanks still hold a 2-0 lead. Wang is pitching well, though the
leadoff man has reached in each inning. Wang hit the first batter he faced,
Jack Hannahan, with the first pitch he threw, but there was no more damage
that inning. Mark Ellis doubled to lead off the second inning and stayed
there. Kurt Suzuki started the third with a single and one out later was
erased in a 6-4-3 double play.
11:20 p.m.: All that leadoff man on stuff hurt Wang in the fourth, though
you can debate whether he deserves the blame for Jack Cust’s single or
Betemit does. Cust smoked one right at Betemit, who did his best impression
of a matador. It was ruled a single and, one out later, Cust scored when
Mark Ellis hit his second double of the game. Ellis had been 0-for-6
lifetime against Wang before tonight, incidentally.
Wang got out of it without any more damage, though.
1:57 a.m.: Yanks eke out a 3-1 victory, thanks to Wang, who pitched very
well and was expert at dodging trouble – four ground-ball double plays –
and relief work by Jose Veras and Mariano Rivera for a fourth straight day.
Here are some post-game tidbits:
Girardi on Wang: “His sinker was great. He gave us 7.1 innings and didn’t
throw a lot of pitches. Great outing.”
On whether Wang needed a good outing after being so bad for so long:
“Everyone needs a good one after a few bad outings. You want to feel good
about yourself. He needed it.”
Girardi said Wang’s sinker was “diving. That’s why you saw all the double
plays.”
As we previously discussed, Wang’s arm has been out of sync with his motion.
It happened a few times tonight, too, but Wang corrected it himself,
according to pitching coach Dave Eiland. Eiland also described Wang as
“frustrated, aggravated” with the way he had been pitching. “Today was
a huge step in the right direction.”
Eiland and Wang looked at video of Wang’s starts last year and noticed,
among other things, that Wang’s leg lift had gotten a little slow, which
hurt his sinker. Wang said he sped up his arm tonight, as well.
Asked if the win helped his confidence, Wang said, “Very big help.”
Farnsworth was available – he would’ve pitched the ninth had the
Yankees added more insurance runs. But Rivera also told Girardi he
was able to pitch despite throwing three straight days. He’s now
pitched four in a row, unprecedented this season. Girardi actually
asked to speak on the bullpen phone to Rivera after the bottom of
the eighth, the first time he’s done that all season.
Rivera is 17-for-17 in save chances.
Finally, here is Alex Rodriguez on that odd balk in the fifth.
With two out and Bobby Abreu on first, Dana Eveland stopped in
the middle of his motion and he was flagged for a balk. A-Rod
said: “I called time. I think he heard it. I said it very loudly.
One of those unfortunate plays.”
