But the Yankees' ace is still a long shot to return this season, with mid-September the new best-case date. Wang, who suffered a mid-foot sprain of the Lisfranc ligament and a partial tear of the peroneal longus tendon running the bases in Houston on June 15, is still on crutches and has switched from a cast to a walking boot. Does Wang think he will pitch again this season? "Maybe," he said. An X-ray taken yesterday showed no setbacks and Wang will be re-evaluated in a week. The Yankees had hoped for a Sept. 1 return, but manager Joe Girardi admitted that's not likely. "I still believe there's a good chance we're going to get him back in September," he said. "Sept. 1, that might be stretching it a little bit." The regular season ends Sept. 28. If all goes well, Wang could make a few starts down the stretch, then be a candidate for postseason duty. If all doesn't go well - Wang takes longer to heal and the Yankees don't make the playoffs - his next start will come in April 2009. "I don't think you count on anything," Girardi said. "Obviously, we hope we're going to get him back because he's a big part of our club." Pavano pitches Here's a scary thought: Girardi said Wang is "a lot further behind" Carl Pavano, who made his first rehab start last night after reconstructive elbow surgery. Girardi probably just meant Wang was behind Pavano timetable-wise. Wang's history - unlike Pavano's - has been to make every effort to get back on the mound when injured. Pavano threw two scoreless innings (28 pitches, one hit, one walk, four strikeouts) for the Yankees' Charleston, S.C., affiliate. Phil Hughes (stress fracture, rib) relieved Pavano and pitched three scoreless innings (28 pitches) in his first rehab outing and allowed two hits and one walk with one strikeout.
