WANG MAKING HIS RECOVERY UNDER THE RADAR By GEORGE A. KING III TAMPA - As Chien-Ming Wang limped toward home plate on June 15 in Houston, the Yankees' dugout delivered a collective groan that told you how much the right-hander meant to the remainder of the season. "Everyone in the dugout went, "Oh, (shoot)," Jorge Posada recalled yesterday. "Not having your No. 1 pitcher, it was tough to recover." The next day, Wang was ruled out for the rest of the season with a sprain of the Lisfranc ligament and a partial tear of a tendon in his right foot. He watched the Yankees fail to make the playoffs. Now, the foot is fine but Wang is no longer the Yankees' ace. That title has been inhaled by CC Sabathia and the Yankees didn't give A.J. Burnett $82.5 million to be a No. 3 starter. So, Wang, who is 46-14 in his last three seasons, likely will drop to No. 3 in the rotation. It's the latest illustration of a pitcher who manages to glide far below the radar. Sabathia (seven years; $161 million) and Burnett are the sexy investments while Wang will earn $5 million this coming season. With a 54-20 career record, a spotless image, a fierce desire to compete and a low-maintenance personality, Wang is the 14th highest paid Yankee. Nick Swisher, Robinson Cano and Xavier Nady each makes more than Wang. "We all appreciate what he does for us," Mariano Rivera said. "I don't know the business side." What the Yankees want out of Wang is 200-plus innings and no more health issues. His running is being limited to indoors to save the pounding, but he is cleared to do everything else. The tinge of tightness he felt running at the minor league complex has vanished and he hopes to be cleared to run outdoors in a month or two.
