NEW YORK - A.J. Burnett's reaction to hearing of his six-game suspension by
Major League Baseball was one of shock.
"Really?" he remembered saying.
Burnett was suspended and fined for throwing near Nelson Cruz's head during
Tuesday night's game against Texas when Mark Teixeira was plunked twice by
Rangers starter Vicente Padilla. He plans to appeal the suspension.
"It looked bad," Burnett said. "Obviously it was up high. Any time a ball
goes up that close, it doesn't make a good statement. Like I said, I can't do
anything about it. The decision's made."
It is the first time in Burnett's career that he has been suspended. The
suspension was set to begin Thursday until Burnett appealed.
After Burnett's pitch nearly hit Cruz, both benches were warned.
"You can't change anything," Burnett said. "You saw the game after the
warning. I mean, there were balls thrown inside. Pitchers still have to pitch
their game. Balls are going to get away. Hard throwers throw hard and balls
are going to get away."

As Chien-Ming Wang struggles here in the fourth inning it makes an exchange
Joe Girardi had with reporters before the game even more poignant. The
manager was asked what would happen if Wang's start mirrored his struggles
earlier this season.
"I don't want to put that type of pressure on Chien-Ming Wang, like it's
one-and-you're-done," Girardi said. "I don't think that's fair to a guy that
has had as much success as he's had."
Girardi said Wang was slotted into C.C. Sabathia's spot in the rotation
rather than Phil Hughes' because he liked Wang against the Rangers'
righty-heavy lineup. But he also emphasized Wang's track record. By starting
Wang on Thursday, that sets him up to pitch against the Red Sox in Boston on
Tuesday and at home against the Mets on June 14.
"Let's not forget, the bulk of his work has been really good," Girardi said.
"He had three really tough starts. He's won 46 games in two and a half years.
I'm not sure how many guys in our clubhouse can boast that. This is not just
a guy we're trying out. This is a guy we believe in and has been the ace of
the staff for the last three or four years."
