YANKEE GAMBLE PITS EX-ACE'S PAST VS. HUGHES' FUTURE
CHIEN-Ming Wang produced his best start of the season and the Yankees won.
Now for the bad news, Yankees fans: Wang's best start of the season was
five runs in 4 2/3 innings. In his current situation, generating 14 outs
and leaving the Yankees behind only 5-1 is known as improvement.
"It was progress, but we have to get more consistent," pitching coach
Dave Eiland conceded.
And this is an important gamble within the Yankees season: re-investing
in Wang rather than continuing the intriguing apprenticeship of Phil Hughes.
For now, Hughes is in the bullpen. But if he does not get enough work as
a reliever over the next 7-10 days then Hughes will be returned to Triple-A.
The Yanks do not want all their work to re-establish him as a confident,
competent starter to be squandered as he waits for calls that might never
come.
Is this the right call? Or should it be Wang waiting for the opening?
Here is another way to think about it: If you were in charge of the Yanks
and told you could have either Wang or Hughes make 20 starts the rest of
the year, whom would you pick?
"Wang," Eiland said. "He is a proven winner. He came into the season as
our No. 2 starter. He had a rough start. That doesn't mean we just push
him aside and forget about him."
That is a totally reasonable assessment. But we know the caveat around the
Yankees, all that matters is winning. So, again, are the Yanks more likely
to win a greater amount of Wang's 20 remaining starts or Hughes'? What do
you like better the rest of this season: Hughes' future or Wang's chances
to recapture his past?
This is no slam-dunk decision. Hughes, after all, is not Zack Grienke. His
changeup is still not near fully developed and his ability to limit damage
has yet to be fully honed. But, to date, he has been a better option in
2009 than Wang with the promise of getting even better.
"Let's not forget the bulk of [Wang's] work has been really, really good,"
Joe Girardi said. "This is not just a guy we are trying out. This is a guy
we really, really believe in. This is a guy who has been the ace of the
staff the last few years."
But, again, these are the win-now Yankees. This decision can't be about
the 19 games Wang won in both 2006 and 2007, or that he is making $5 million
this year or about 10 times more than Hughes. This has to be about 2009.
This has to be about truly having faith that Wang took a positive step
yesterday and believing strongly in your gut that he is going to keep
taking steps, because that next step is in Fenway Park, where even the
ace version of Wang struggled (career 5.11 ERA in seven starts).
"His arm speed and his arm strength were better, no doubt," Eiland said
of Wang's effort in the Yanks' 8-6 win over the Rangers. "We think he is
almost there."
Wang did retire the first six Rangers, three by strikeouts. His fastball
was consistently 91-94 mph and there were times it had devilishly good
sink. But in attempting to go inside, Wang threw a lot of fastballs that
tailed back into the zone and he also became more hittable as the game
progressed: Texas was 1-for-8 with a sac bunt the first time through the
lineup and 5-for-8 with a walk the second time. That might just be about
re-building stamina.
"I was happy with what I saw," Girardi said.
It was progress, but progress away from three previous starts that
produced the hideous ERA of 34.50. So there is still a lot more
progress the Yanks need to see. It is all part of the gamble that's
so vital to their 2009 season: Wang's past vs. Hughes' future.
