She was once intimidated by her, but Czech Nicole Vaidisova is relishing the
opportunity to take on eight-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams as the
Australian Open moves into the business end of the tournament.
Vaidisova, who took out Japan's Ai Sugiyama in the third round on Friday, meets
the imposing Williams in a mouth-watering round four encounter on Sunday.
Vaidisova is yet to beat Williams in three meetings between the pair.
But the 18-year-old from Prague, who was beaten 7-6 6-4 by the American in last
year's Australian Open semi-finals, revealed she is a lot tougher proposition a
year on.
And while familiarity doesn't breed contempt, Vaidisova is comfortable facing
the extroverted Williams again.
"Obviously the first time (I played her) I admit I was intimidated," she said.
"But you get to play those players more and more times."
"You have more experience with them, so you do respect them. But the
intimidation I think goes to the side."
She said of Sunday's appointment: "Obviously it doesn't get much tougher than
that."
"She's a great champion, a great fighter. She definitely will fight till the
end.
"You know, it's a Grand Slam; everybody wants to do their best."
"I'll definitely have to have my A game on. My movement, my focus, my game,
everything has to be together."
Rather than dwelling on her loss to Williams 12 months ago, Vaidisova has drawn
inspiration from that performance.
She also learned plenty from the defeat and aims to put those lessons to work
on Sunday.
"I think (I need to) move her more around than I did last year," she offered.
"I also had my chances last year, especially in the first set. You know, with
those players you definitely have to use the first ones because you're not
going to get much more.
"(Last year) I was able to play my game, not look on the other side (of the
net) as much.
"I think I just have to improve a little bit. I think I have a good chance."
