Since his one glorious year at Syracuse University, which preceded his first
professional season with the Denver Nuggets, Carmelo Anthony has always
caught notice with his flashy smile.
While leading his school to its first national championship in 2003, and then
spearheading the Nuggets’ remarkable playoff run last season, his grin was
plastered on sports pages and TV screens all over the country.
On Wednesday, December 1 at the Cross Community Coalition Family Resource
Center in Globeville, that signature smile brought similar expressions to the
faces of nearly 100 children. Donning a Santa Claus hat and assuming the big
guy’s position in front of the Melo Christmas Tree, Anthony played the role
of gift-giver after posing for a picture with every child – and nearly every
adult – in the place.
He enjoyed every minute of it.
“I always have fun when I do stuff like this,” he said.
The youngsters, who came in from one of five Denver-area Family Resource
Centers, all received a “Very Melo Christmas Party” T-shirt, a gift bag and
Polaroid picture of their moment with Melo. After all the photos had been
snapped, Anthony presented Family Resource Centers, his non-profit agency of
choice, with a $30,000 donation from his Melo candy bar sales and the
proceeds from the charity basketball game he hosted earlier this year.
“I could have chosen the YMCA or the Boys and Girls Club, but there was just
something that stood out about the Family Resource Center,” he said.
Each family in attendance also took home tickets for the Nuggets’ game on
Monday against the Orlando Magic, and vouchers good for a Colorado Ballet
Nutcracker performance this weekend.
To say the least, everyone left happy. And for some kids, their Christmas
wish was granted early.
When asked how long he’d been waiting to meet Melo, 9-year-old Cameron
Anderson of Aurora said, “All my life.” After shaking his idol’s hand and
posing for a picture, Anderson couldn’t stop smiling. “That was really cool,
” he said.
The kids’ gift bags contained a copy of Anthony’s recently-released book, It
’s Just the Beginning, as well as issues of Brand Jordan, a catalogue
featuring the Nike Air Jordan Melo 1.5, and Above the Rim, the Denver Nuggets
’ magazine.
When all was said and done, the Family Resource Center presented Anthony with
a thank-you card signed by every child in attendance. Without hesitation, the
Nuggets’ 20-year-old star flashed that familiar smile.
“I enjoy doing this. It’s awesome,” he said
