Nuggets hope injury bug has come and gone

As Nuggets guard Greg Buckner sat against the wall at one end of the team’s
practice gym, his laugh could be heard from the other end. Though he and
fellow hobbled teammate Voshon Lenard were the only two Nuggets not
participating in that day’s scrimmage, they had good reason to be in high
spirits: it was just the two of them.
That hasn’t been the case much of this season for the Nuggets, as only a
select few guys haven’t sat out of practice. At times it’s been tough to
field two full teams for an end-of-practice, half-court game.
But things appear on the up and up for Denver, which has used 13 different
starting lineups before reaching the halfway mark of the season. The Nuggets
know Lenard is gone for the year with a ruptured left Achilles tendon, but he
soon may be the only one on the injured list.
Buckner’s listed at day-to-day with a right groin strain, and Marcus Camby’
s improved lower back strain has allowed him to increase his participation.
Of late, Carmelo Anthony, Kenyon Martin and Nene have also missed games due
to injuries.
Just two of the 13 players listed on Denver’s active roster have played in
every game this season. Interestingly enough, those two are the players with
the ball the most: point guards Andre Miller and Earl Boykins.
“Last year we were spoiled, because we barely had any [injuries],” Boykins
says. “It’s rare for a team to go an entire year like we did without many.
But it has sort of caught up with us this year and we’re getting them all at
one time.”
What’s been hard for the Nuggets to overcome is the key players going down.
As of January 7th, their leading scorer (Anthony) has missed six games; their
top rebounder (Martin) has been out two games; their best shot blocker
(Camby) has sat out six games; their top perimeter defender (Buckner) has
missed three games; and their top outside shooter from a year ago (Lenard)
has played in only the first game.
“When you go through an NBA season, you’re going to have nicks and bruises,
” Buckner says. “The good teams have minor injuries, or limited injuries.
“Unfortunately so far, we’ve had a lot of injuries to a lot of key guys. It
’s been hard for us with the rotation, getting guys jelled with chemistry
and things like that. But we just have to find a way to fight through it and
try to steal some games while guys are out.”
While Buckner adds that “it’s tough, probably one of the worst situations I
’ve been in, in the NBA with injuries,” DerMarr Johnson sees a bright side.
“It’s better that it’s happening now rather than later in the season,” he
says. “By the time we really need a push, they’ll be healthy by then.”
It appears as if, barring any other unforeseen injuries, everyone except
Lenard could be good to play before Denver hosts the All-Star game in
February. By the end of the first week of January, only Buckner and Camby
joined Lenard on the team’s daily injury report. But Buckner and Camby were
taking part in at least the practice drills they were allowed, and Lenard was
even cleared to begin light shooting.
Just as the flu bug comes and goes, the injury bug may have come, bitten the
Nuggets quite hard, and gone on to hassle another team. At least that’s what
Denver is hoping.
“It’s just part of the game. You can’t really get too frustrated because it
’s a long season,” says Buckner. “We just got to find a way to stick
together and combine all the talents of the guys we have on the court.”
