In my view, ￡3m for a player like Cassano is nowhere near enough.” The Giallorossi shelled out ￡20m for the Bari starlet in 2001, but with his contract set to expire in the summer, a mid-season sale is essential if they are to get anything back from that investment. Juventus seem to have stepped back from their strong links with the Italian international and the favourites to capture Cassano now are Real Madrid and Inter. Spalletti has other problems to contend with before the Christmas break, as his team face high-flying Chievo on Wednesday evening without Amantino Mancini, Vincenzo Montella, Shabani Nonda, Christian Panucci or Cassano. “We have a good chance of doing well in this game. We tried to win until the end against Sampdoria on Sunday and I think I'll continue with that new tactic that has Francesco Totti as the lone striker supported by three players. Simone Perrotta has the right qualities to run into space.” Bepi Pillon was expected to battle relegation with his Flying Donkeys, but they have instead pushed their way into sixth place – six points above Roma in the standings. “I know Pillon well, as we were teammates at Spezia,” noted Spalletti. “I respect him a great deal and this match holds many hidden dangers. We must learn that we need both quality and strength to win a game, as one of these elements is simply not enough.” This has been a disappointing campaign for the capital club and their Coach admits everyone could’ve done better. “We tried to deal with situations as best we could and work for the long-term future of the side.
