Boss Francesco Guidolin, whose Monaco side face Basel in the last 16 of the competition next week, had to make the tough choice between his two Italian strikers. UEFA rules dictate that a side is only allowed to pick one player who has already played in European competition with another club during the course of the same season. With both Di Vaio and Vieri having appeared in the Champions League for Valencia and Milan respectively, only one of them could feature against Basel next week – and Guidolin plumped for Vieri. The news will come as a blow to the former Juventus and Parma striker who moved to Monaco from Spain shortly before Vieri, in a bid to revive his career and make a late bid for a place in Marcello Lippi's World Cup squad in the summer.
