Klinsmann admires Azzurri
Tuesday 4 July, 2006
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jurgen Klinsmann admits Italy deserved their place in the Final
and hailed his young squad for getting this far.
“We had our chances to score first, but we didn't manage it.
Then they took theirs. It hurts terribly. A big compliment too to Italy,
they are in the final and good luck to them," said the former Inter star.
“That's how it goes and that's what makes football so fascinating.
The World Cup has been a huge success for the team and for the country
and has shown a whole new German face to the world and that is something
we can all be proud of."
The Azzurri squeezed their way through to the Final in Berlin on Sunday
after two stunning goals in the closing stages of extra time
from Fabio Grosso and Alessandro Del Piero.
“We are hugely disappointed but you must compliment our team,
they are a young team. The spirit and character they showed is amazing.
They made a country proud. It's something very special to play
a World Cup in your home country. The boys are sitting there
and have a bitter pill to swallow,” he added.
Philipp Lahm was one of the few Germans who agreed to speak
with Italian television after the final whistle and
he held up his hands to this result.
“Once you reach the semi-final, of course you want to go all the way.
Italy were tactically organised, but they won with a fantastic strike
from Grosso. The Final is 50-50, but I personally hope the Azzurri win it,”
said the full-back.

Bierhoff accepts German defeat
Wednesday 5 July, 2006
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
German team manager Oliver Bierhoff has admitted that Italy's expertise
was a key factor in their 2-0 World Cup semi-final win last night.
The Azzurri qualified for their sixth World Cup Final after
dumping out the hosts in Dortmund and Bierhoff had few complaints.
“It was difficult and Italy tried till the end with players
of great class,” stated the former Udinese, Milan and Chievo striker.
“[Fabio] Grosso scored a wonderful goal,
but perhaps we were a little naive in not holding on to the result.”
Marcello Lippi's men struck late on in extra-time even if
they were unfortunate not to break the deadlock a little earlier.
“Both sides were organised and we were lucky when the Azzurri
hit the woodwork twice, so we accept this defeat and are proud of
what we did in this tournament,” he continued.
“Perhaps tonight they had more experience, patience, cool heads and
the clinical finishing to take advantage of one of our rare mistakes.”
Germany, runners-up to Brazil four years ago, will now be playing
for third place on Saturday when they meet the losers of
tonight's other semi-final between France and Portugal.
