Then they took theirs. It hurts terribly. A big compliment too to Italy, they are in the final and good luck to them," said the former Inter star. “That's how it goes and that's what makes football so fascinating. The World Cup has been a huge success for the team and for the country and has shown a whole new German face to the world and that is something we can all be proud of." The Azzurri squeezed their way through to the Final in Berlin on Sunday after two stunning goals in the closing stages of extra time from Fabio Grosso and Alessandro Del Piero. “We are hugely disappointed but you must compliment our team, they are a young team. The spirit and character they showed is amazing. They made a country proud. It's something very special to play a World Cup in your home country. The boys are sitting there and have a bitter pill to swallow,” he added. Philipp Lahm was one of the few Germans who agreed to speak with Italian television after the final whistle and he held up his hands to this result. “Once you reach the semi-final, of course you want to go all the way. Italy were tactically organised, but they won with a fantastic strike from Grosso.
