Francesco Totti will play no part in Italy's two October
Euro 2008 qualifiers. “That's his decision for the time being,”
said Roma boss Luciano Spalletti.

The forward is still recovering from the ankle fracture suffered
in February and had told reporters that he would not return to
the fold before 2007 – when he hopes he will once again be on top form.
However, Italy boss Roberto Donadoni wants him back for
the must win ties against Ukraine and Georgia, and met the player at
Roma's training centre at Trigoria on Monday in an attempt to
convince the player to return immediately.
“For now, Francesco will not play with the national team,”
said Spalletti to Sky Italia.
“I did not take part in the meeting, but I spoke to Donadoni after
lunch and this is what he confirmed to me,”added the Giallorossi Coach.
Il Capitano will therefore not be available for the match against Ukraine
on October 7, scheduled at the Stadio Olimpico, followed four days later
by the visit to Georgia.
“Francesco is working well and is continuing his treatment,
but he fears he is not in the condition to give his best to the Italy team
and that is why he's thinking this over,” continued Spalletti.
“At times he still feels pain in his ankles, he isn't resting his feet
completely on the ground and this causes some slight problems.
“But he is training and trying to make up for this.
He proved on the pitch that he is not afraid of tackles,”
continued the tactician.
Totti had announced his intention to retire from international football
after the World Cup in Germany, but then changed his mind.
He returned to the Stadio Olimpico for the first time
since his injury in the Giallorossi's Serie A debut against Livorno
and was one of the scorers in Roma's splendid Champions League start
against Shakhtar Donetsk.
