Corini's Palermo heartbreak
Friday 8 June, 2007

Eugenio Corini was in tears during today's Press conference
as he left Palermo. “I wanted to be a part of the club,
but they did not want me.”
It was a bitter farewell for the former club captain, who has been a key
figure in their climb up from Serie B to qualifying for the UEFA Cup.
His contract is up this summer and the 36-year-old has not seen it
renewed by the Rosanero, so he is now a free agent.
“I don't want my name to be used to cover something up,”
said the midfielder.
“I thought I was a focus point for the club and hoped they would
offer me more than just a simple contract renewal for a player,
but unfortunately I was not given that chance.
“I was hoping to create a sense of belonging here,
but instead they showed that they were not counting on me at all.
I would have liked to be important for this side.”
Corini had been tipped for a future behind the scenes
as a director or future Coach at Palermo,
but instead walks away in the worst of circumstances.
“I wanted to become a part of this club,
playing for the next season and then taking on a directorial role.
I imagined my final game in Palermo as a festival with the Stadio Barbera
fans who in these four years have been so close to me.
“I really felt the desire to continue building something important
with this side, but unfortunately that is not the case.”
Despite injury problems and disagreements with Coach Francesco Guidolin,
Corini still notched up 10 goals in 27 games this season –
the most prolific top flight campaign of his career.
The former Chievo hero is likely to settle into a new club quickly with
Napoli leading the race, although Parma and Torino are also interested.
Meanwhile, Palermo have officially signed Atalanta midfielder
Giulio Migliaccio in exchange for their half of Adriano Pereira Da Silva's
contract. He reunites with former Orobici boss Stefano Colantuono in Sicily.
The Rosanero have also picked up Anderlecht teenager Samir Ujkani.
Both players have penned five-year deals.
