Italy Under-19s Through To Euro Semis 7/21/2008 4:45 AM Italy Under-19s are though to the semi-finals of the European Championships following a thrilling 4-3 win over the Czech Republic last night. Francesco Rocca’s men had drawn both of their first two group games going into the clash with the Czech hosts, and knew that unless they won they would probably be on their way out. The Czechs were the better team in the first half, but Italy took the lead against the run of play on 21 minutes as Alberto Paloschi made a trademark run behind the defence and cut back for Andrea Poli to score. Sixty seconds later the Czechs were level through their danger man Tomas Necid, who played a clever one-two before firing left footed past Vincenzo Fiorillo. Rocca made an inspired change at half time, withdrawing the off-form Fernando Forestieri, and introducing Giacomo Bonaventura. Italy took control of the game, and Bonaventura made an immediate impact, smashing in a long-range shot into the bottom corner. Once again though the Czechs hit back immediately, as Petr Reinberk found space down the right, and hit a ball across the six yard box for Jan Morávek to turn home. With England winning in the other group game , Italy knew they would be out unless they won too. On 71 minutes they took the lead for a third time, as Paloschi thrashed home a penalty after being brought down himself in the box. Mazzarani was sent off for Italy, while Paloschi and Necid both missed glorious chances, until Poli wrapped up the game for the young Azzurri with his second goal by finishing clinically from Stefan Chuka Okaka’s pass. Moravek set up a tense finale with his second of the match in the 86th minute, but Italy held out to win 4-3 and top the group. The Czechs also progress, as England and Greece bow out. Italy take on Hungary in the semi finals on Wednesday, while the Czechs face Group A winners Germany.
