Italy need just one more point to secure their passage to the 2010 World
Cup in South Africa, following their convincing 2-0 victory over Bulgaria
in Turin.

Goals to the Juventus duo in Fabio Grosso and Vincenzo Iaquinta were enough
for the Azzurri to attain another three points, and all but assure themselves
of top spot in Group 8.

The captain of the country, Fabio Cannavaro, was extremely pleased with
the strength and determination his team-mates showed throughout the contest,
something that he stressed in a post-match interview.

“Tonight was a big step forward for us,” Cannavaro declared to Raisport.

“It was important for us to win and to play well. By doing this, we have
been able to regain some confidence as a team, and we ensured that this
was the case early on in the first half.

“I think we did very well in this match, and this is how we need to play
if we want to win the World Cup.

“For three years we have been criticised by many people, who have said
that we should change everything. But tonight we have shown that we are
a very strong side, and most importantly that we all can play with each
other.”

Cannavaro concluded the interview by making reference to those who have
pointed the finger at his performances over this time, suggesting that
he is the reason why the national team has been struggling.

He continued, “The last two seasons in Madrid, I’ve played at a really
good level. I know that the levels of 2006 are what is required to win
the World Cup, but this does not only apply to me I think.

“We have many young players who will improve a lot over the next year,
