Thompson passes Shocker:
Tennessee Smokies (Double-A) pitcher Brad Thompson threw five scoreless
innings in Wednesday's 11-2 win over West Tennessee, setting a new minor
league record with 56 2/3 consecutive shutout innings.
The previous record was 54, set in 1916 by Urban Shocker. Thompson allowed
a run with two outs in the sixth inning, falling ten outs shy of equaling
the professional record of 59 innings set in 1988 by Orel Hershiser of the
Los Angeles Dodgers.
