Shoulder problems and faulty mechanics set him back throughout much of June and July. After returning to the regular rotation, he had a bone in his right hand broken by a line drive on July 21. He didn't pitch again until August 23, his return delayed an extra week by an ankle injury foolishly suffered during hotel horseplay with teammates. Morris finished with four strong starts in five September outings. Pitching Morris was out of sync much of last year, costing him several miles per hour on his fastball and also causing him to lose command of his breaking stuff and offspeed pitches. Shoulder troubles have dogged him along with the inconsistent mechanics, but when Morris is right, there are few better righthanders in baseball. He throws in the mid-90s, he has developed a good sinking fastball to go with his four-seamer, his changeup is as good as anybody's and he at times will show an effective power curve. Morris is an excellent competitor, but will sometimes be his own toughest critic and start to lose aggressiveness on the mound. Defense & Hitting Morris has learned to hold runners much better, and only six stolen bases were attempted against him in 2003. He is a good athlete who handles most defensive plays well, and he occasionally can do some damage swinging the bat. 2004 Outlook For the Cardinals to return to the playoffs, they need Morris to be the ace he was in 2001-02. He was over his shoulder troubles by last September, and he now should be just entering his prime. Morris can be a free agent after this season, and the timing couldn't be better for him to re-establish himself as one of baseball's best starting pitchers.
