YANKS MAY TURN TO CARDS RIGHTY FOR ROTATION BOOST
By GEORGE KING
October 31, 2006 -- The Yankees continue to hear from teams asking about
Gary Sheffield, but it doesn't appear they expect to get a starting pitcher
in exchange for the slugger if they pick up his option with the intent of
trading him.
That's why they are open to seeing what soon-to-be free agent right-hander
Jeff Suppan, who played a big part in the Cardinals' improbable journey to
a World Series title, is looking for.
"His name is on their list of pitching possibilities," a member of another
organization told The Post yesterday.
Although the Yankees aren't going to pick up Mike Mussina's $17 million
option for next season, it's believed they will retain Mussina with a
two-year deal that likely will be in the $10 million a year range. It
could be a little higher because Mussina, rightfully so, wants to be
paid more than Carl "American Idle" Pavano, who makes $10 million a year
to do nothing.
So, a free-agent deal with Suppan wouldn't be to replace Mussina.
The Cardinals will make an effort to retain the 31-year-old Suppan,
who was 1-1 with a 2.49 ERA in four postseason starts. However, after
the postseason - which included 15 innings pitched, five hits and one
earned run against the Mets in the NLCS - Suppan's price might be too
rich for the Cardinals.
Suppan, who is 106-101 with a 4.61 ERA, made $4 million this past
season when he was 12-7. Since the free agent class of pitchers isn't
deep, Suppan could command $8 to $10 million a year.
"We will be filing for free agency," Suppan's agent, Scott Leventhal,
said yesterday. "We have had no conversation with the Cardinals."
Suppan has until Nov. 11 to file for free agency. Leventhal said since
the Cardinals won the World Series on Friday night, he hasn't had a
chance to talk to his client about the future.
"At this point the excitement of the World Series is on his mind,"
Leventhal said. "Right now he is still on a cloud. No doubt it was
a great season for him. He couldn't have asked for better."
The Yankees haven't had much success bringing NL starters into the
beastly AL East (Jaret Wright, Shawn Chacon and Pavano), but Suppan
has worked in the AL and pitched effectively for the putrid Royals.
From 1999-2002, Suppan was 39-51 for Kansas City and won 10 games in
each of the first three seasons. He was 3-4 with a 5.57 ERA in 11 games
for the 2003 Red Sox, but didn't appear in a postseason game.
The Yankees' interest in Suppan (44-26 in the last three seasons for
St. Louis) could be a hedge against either not landing Japanese righty
Daisuke Matsuzaka or Randy Johnson's surgically repaired back not being
ready by the start of the season.
As for developments in the Sheffield saga, his lawyer, Rufus Williams,
was tight-lipped.
"I have nothing to talk to you about," Williams said. The Yankees have
until Nov. 6 to pick up Sheffield's $13 million option for next season.
GM Brian Cashman didn't return calls on the subject.
The Yankees could announce Kevin Long as their hitting coach this week.
The club also is waiting to see if Tony Pena has a chance at the Nationals'
managing job. Pena said yesterday, "I haven't spoken to them since we talked
on the phone" after the Yankees were eliminated by the Tigers.
