Note: the Seven Days on the Farm piece will appear on Monday this week.
If you want a quick-and-simple way to find good prospects at the Single-A
level, consider the .17/.17 thresholds; a strikeout rate below 17% and an
isolated power (slugging average - batting avreage) above .170
It isn't easy for a young player to demonstrate such balanced batting skills
in his first full season of professional baseball. When teenagers hit this
well at the Single-A level, they usually go on to great things in their
professional careers. Previous members of this exclusive club include
Daric Barton, Prince Fielder, Brian McCann, Robinson Cano, Casey Kotchman,
Adrian Gonzalez, Marcus Giles, Vernon Wells, and Paul Konerko.
There are certainly many good young prospects who don't meet these standards
in their first full season of pro ball, but this quick test yields very few
false positives. In other words, when teenagers hit this well at the Single-A
level they usually go on to have major league careers. We're only 45 days
into the minor league season, but here are some of the early performances of
teenagers who have a chance of joining the .17/.17 club this year:
Name ORG K% ISOP
Jason Heyward Atl 16.4% .193
Freddie Freeman Atl 14.5% .167
Pete Kozma Stl 17.2% .157
Abraham Almonte NYY 16.1% .154
Jake Smolinski Was 17.2% .143
Engel Beltre Tex 17.1% .142
Jason Heyward leads this list as the only prospect who is actually surpassing
the .17/.17 marks. The 14th overall pick from the 2007 draft has done nothing
but hit since entering the Braves organization.
Freddie Freeman, another Braves prospect, was the 78th overall pick in the
2007 draft. He has potential on the mound, but so far the Braves look good
for letting him hit.
Pete Kozma was a first-round pick in last year's draft. His power production
has dropped a bit in recent weeks after a hot start to the season. He is a
good-fielding shortstop, so he would be very valuable if he can maintain
this level of offensive production.
Abraham Almonte is far under-the-radar for a Yankees prospect.
The Dominican-born centerfielder has good speed and can apparently hit.
Unfortunately, he's also injured at the moment.
Jake Smolinski, a second-round pick from the 2007 draft, is only hitting .231
with a meager .668 OPS this year. Every component of his performance looks
very good, however, so the production should be there later this year.
Get a good seat on the bandwagon while there's still room.
Engel Beltre came to the Rangers from the Red Sox organization as part of
last year's Eric Gagne deal. He was struggling to make contact last year,
but his 2008 performance has been encouraging. If only he would walk once in
a while...
There you have it; the early-season watch list with six young players to
watch. I'll post an update later in the season if more names pop up on the
radar.
