JUPITER, Fla. — The Cardinals winced Monday morning. The San Diego Padres have acquired pitching prospect Luke Gregerson as the player to be named in the Dec. 4 deal that brought the Redbirds shortstop Khalil Greene. The selection is hardly a throwaway. Gregerson, 24, impressed manager Tony La Russa and pitching coach Dave Duncan during a couple late-inning appearances in Grapefruit League games. Duncan, who typically holds young arms to a high standard, mentioned Gregerson on multiple occasions as someone he would like to see again. Gregerson possesses above-average command of a sinking fastball. He had made the Florida State League All-Star Game and Texas League All-Star Game in his two full professional seasons. Gregerson last season allowed RH hitters a .202 average and six extra-base hits in 217 plate appearances with 59 strikeouts against only 11 walks. Gregerson was 7-6 with a 3.35 ERA in 57 relief appearances at Springfield last season. A 28th round selection in the 2006 amateur draft, Gregerson is an Illinois native who attended St. Xavier University. The Cardinals placed him in the Arizona Fall League after last season. He departs having struck out 196 against 61 walks in 172 1/3 innings in three professional seasons. The Cardinals sent submariner Mark Worrell to the Padres at the time of the trade. Worrell, who made four relief appearances for the Cardinals last June, became disgruntled over a lack of major league opportunity in St. Louis and made known his desire to be traded shortly before the Greene deal. The Padres announced last week Worrell would require elbow ligament replacement surgery and be lost for the 2009 season. In other camp news: Closer candidate Chris Perez just completed a 10-minute side session without complication and, according to La Russa, third baseman Troy Glaus is no longer considered a possibility to return from a January surgery until May….
