JUPITER, Fla. The Cardinals have scaled back their expectations for third baseman Troy Glaus’ return from January surgery to repair a torn muscle. Once hopeful of returning in April, Glaus acknowledged Monday his rehab has reached a plateau and he has temporarily ceased baseball-related activities to allow his affected area more recovery time. “I look at it like picking a scab,” Glaus said. “If you keep picking it, it will eventually get better. It’s just going to take a lot longer. If you leave it alone, things tend to go quicker.” Glaus has not swung a bat or thrown for almost a week, instead embracing conditioning drills. Glaus offered no timetable when he might resume baseball-related drills, but he no longer appears on pace to participate in Grapefruit League action. “It’s still there a little bit,” Glaus said of discomfort in the muscle near his right shoulder. “Right now I’m just trying to get stronger so when I’m able to do the other things it’s full-speed ahead.” Asked for a modified timetable, Glaus said, “Who knows? In three or four days we may go out and throw and maybe it’s fine and maybe not. I can’t predict the future.” Glaus had hit balls off a tee but had not swung at pitches before recently backing off.
