http://tinyurl.com/komvu6 A look at a few notable deals in which the Cardinals gave up prospects for a big-name veteran: JULY 1997 From Oakland: 1B Mark McGwire. To Oakland: Reliever T.J. Mathews and pitching prospects Blake Stein and Eric Ludwick. The result: The Cardinals signed McGwire to a three-year deal with an option less than six weeks after acquiring him. His numbers with the Cards, at least one of them (70 homers, in 1998) are well-known. Mathews, mostly a setup man, had some decent seasons with Oakland before signing back with the Cards in 2001 — McGwire's last season. Stein had a 21-28 record with Oakland and Kansas City before finishing his major-league career in 2002. Ludwick, the older brother of Cardinals right fielder Ryan Ludwick, had a 2-10 big-league record after the Cardinals dealt him. AUG. 6, 2004 From Colorado: OF Larry Walker. To Colorado: Pitchers Jason Burch, Luis Martinez and Chris Narveson and some $8.5 million. The result: Walker helped the Cardinals to two divisional titles and one World Series. Burch never got above Class AA, Martinez didn't get back to the majors after having gone 0-4 with Milwaukee in 2003 and Narveson has bounced among several operating tables and organizations, including the Cardinals, for whom he pitched briefly in 2006. He has had only spot duty with Milwaukee this year as a lefthanded reliever. JULY 31, 2000 From Baltimore: 1B Will Clark. To Baltimore: Minor-league 3B Jose Leon. The result: Clark, writing a brilliant finish to his career, hit .345 the rest of the year and drove in 42 runs in 51 games as the Cards won the division title. Leon, 23 when the trade was made, hit .225 with five homers in 88 games for Baltimore over three seasons before finally washing out. JULY 20, 2002 From Cleveland: LH Chuck Finley. To Cleveland: Minor-league 1B Luis Garcia and minor-league OF Coco Crisp. The result: Finley went 7-4 for a division winner and taught Andy Benes the split-fingered pitch. Garcia never got to the majors but Crisp had success at Cleveland and Boston before going to Kansas City. Crisp wasn't going to play center field ahead of Jim Edmonds in those days. July 30, 2000 From Pittsburgh: P Jason Christiansen. To Pittsburgh: SS Jack Wilson. The result: Christiansen was traded to San Francisco almost exactly a year later while Wilson still is the Pirates' shortstop. DECEMBER 2004 From Oakland: P Mark Mulder. To Oakland: P Dan Haren, C/1B Daric Barton, P Kiko Calero. The result: There was some short-term gain in Mulder, who won 16 games for the division champion Cards the next season. His career appears over after several prolonged bouts with his left shoulder. On the other hand, Haren, now with Arizona, might be this year's Cy Young Award winner in the National League. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 140.114.207.222
