Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina strained a muscle in his side sliding into second base Wednesday, and the potentially nagging injury will be re-examined today. Molina, a two-time Gold Glove winner, will miss at least a couple of days. The Cardinals expect to know more in that time frame if his availability for opening day is in question. Such a strain can linger and limit a player's ability to twist or bend his torso, and even makes sneezing painful. It would be particularly tricky for a catcher who makes a throw on every pitch and jumps into and out of a squatting position. "It's not a good feeling right now," Molina said about an hour after the injury, padded with ice and bandages. "These are still spring training games, but we've got (less than) two weeks to play," manager Tony La Russa said. "... I worry about Yadi because he's so valuable." Molina doubled to left field in his first at-bat Wednesday, but he had to slide to beat a throw to second base. During the slide, Molina felt a pull in his side. The pain became more intense when he tried to run home on David Freese's single. Molina stopped at third and waved for the trainers. La Russa said the starting catcher had mentioned that there was tightness in his torso before the game Monday in Kissimmee, Fla., but he had continued playing and did not appear on the medical sheet. "When I slid in, I felt something," Molina said. "When 'Freezy' got the base hit, I tried to run hard and that's when I felt it again, worse. It wasn't that bad, but I wanted to make sure I didn't make it worse." Molina, 27, has hit .314 this spring. The double was his sixth of spring. Molina has also been nimble behind the plate; late last season, leg discomfort limited his mobility. Jason LaRue replaced Molina on Wednesday and will get a majority of the innings in Molina's absence.
