Cardinals manager Tony La Russa told broadcast reporters before Tuesday’s
game that he supports recent Arizona legislation calling for tougher
enforcement against illegal immigrants. The border state has been embroiled
in controversy since Gov. Jan Brewer signed the state law on April 23. “I’m
actually a supporter of what Arizona is doing,” La Russa said. “If the
national government doesn’t fix your problem, you’ve got a problem. You’ve
got to fix it yourself. That’s just part of the American way.” Several
interest groups are seeking to have Major League Baseball move the 2011
All-Star Game from Phoenix in response to the issue.
