JUPITER, Fla. — Cardinals co-owner and treasurer Andrew Baur died Sunday at
his Florida home. Cause of death was not immediately released.
The 66-year-old, who was a St. Louis native and longtime friend of Cardinals
chairman Bill DeWitt Jr., was an important part in the current ownership
group's purchase of the Cardinals from Anheuser-Busch in 1996.
"We have lost a wonderful friend," DeWitt said in a statement. "We are deeply
saddened by his sudden passing. Drew loved the Cardinals and was a great
partner. He will be sorely missed by all of the members of our ownership
group.
"The entire Cardinals organization extends its sincere condolences to Drew's
mother, Florence; his three children, Andrew, Todd and McKay;, as well as his
seven grandchildren and countless friends."
A lifeling Cardinals fan, Baur served as chairman of Southwest Bank of St.
Louis, chairman and CEO of County Bank of St. Louis and president and
chairman of Commerce Bank of St. Louis at various points of his career.
Baur was a member of the Cardinals' board of directors since they purchased
the club in 1996.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that Baur suffered a heart attack
several years ago while in his Florida home. According to the newspaper, Baur
was at the Cardinals' spring-training complex as recently as 10 days ago for
an ownership meeting.
