Wizard of Koz: Late magic lifts Cards to NLCS Shortstop's single caps four-run ninth as Redbirds stun Nationals ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- By Jenifer Langosch / MLB.com WASHINGTON -- They were down to their final out, their final strike five separate times. But Yadier Molina and David Freese -- both down to their final strikes -- drew walks to extend the frame. That brought up Daniel Descalso with the bases full, and the second baseman -- in the lineup for his defense -- sent a shot up the middle off the glove of a diving Ian Desmond. Two runs scored to tie the game. Then it was Kozma -- the same middle infielder, who just two months ago seemed to have no future in the organization -- dropping a single into right field to give the Cardinals a two-run lead. The Cards scored nine of the next 10 runs. Matt Holliday doubled home Carlos Beltran in the fourth. Two more runs scored in the fifth -- one on a wild pitch by Gonzalez, the other on a bases-loaded walk. Jon Jay walked and scored on Holliday's groundout in the seventh. Descalso led off the eighth with a homer. Seven pitches into his start, Wainwright had served up a Jayson Werth double, a Bryce Harper triple and a home run to Ryan Zimmerman. That three-run deficit turned into a six-run hole two innings later because of Wainwright's continued inability to locate his fastball. Harper, who entered the night 1-for-18 this postseason, sent a 3-2 fastball over the center-field wall. Zimmerman doubled on the next pitch, and Michael Morse sent the largest crowd in Nationals Park history into a frenzy with Washington's third homer of the night. That did it for Wainwright, whose 2 1/3-inning start was the shortest of his career. It was only one out shorter, though, than the Aug. 31 start he made at Nationals Park.
