Report: Cards exercise option on Garcia Left-handed starter will earn $11.5 million in 2016 The Cardinals have elected to exercise their 2016 team option on left-handed pitcher Jaime Garcia, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported on Saturday night. The club has not confirmed that decision. By picking up the option, St. Louis would pay Garcia $11.5 million next season, rather than a $500,000 buyout. The club also holds a separate $12 million option (with $500,000 buyout) for 2017. Garcia, who turned 29 in July, made 20 starts for the Cardinals and went 10-6 with a 2.43 ERA, striking out 97 and walking 30 over 129 2/3 innings. He also started Game 2 of the National League Division Series against the Cubs, but lasted only two innings, allowing five unearned runs, while battling an illness. Still, it was Garcia's healthiest season since 2012, when he also made 20 starts. He pitched only 16 times from 2013-14 as he battled shoulder injuries. "You think back to Garcia, and the impact that he made on our roster was extremely positive," St. Louis general manager John Mozeliak said after his club was eliminated from the postseason. "If we were having this conversation in February, I don't think any of us would have thought he was going to contribute, especially the way he did."
