With no Lou Williams, no Elton Brand and no Marreese Speights to back up
Brand, the Philadelphia 76ers probably shouldn't have been in the discussion
about this game, much less in the game itself.
But behind the strength of 13-for-20 shooting behind the arc, the 76ers took
things to the wire with the Boston Celtics, who needed a fading baseline
jumper from jumper-adverse Rajon Rondo to take a 113-110 victory.
A win that, without Paul Pierce -- playing all 24 minutes of the second half
-- would not have been.
"He's been MVP to me," Boston coach Doc Rivers said. "Not only just with his
play, but all over. He was on guys in the second quarter and then halftime
about our play. He can cook Thanksgiving dinner for someone and then he'll be
doing it all.
"Paul, to me, was the savior of the game."
Pierce's 27 points paced the Celtics, but his biggest play of the game came
on defense. With 34 seconds remaining and Boston up two, Pierce stepped in
front of a driving Andre Iguodala (25 points) to take a charge, clearing the
path for Rondo's clincher, a shot that may bode well for Rondo's
jump-shooting future.
"All it takes is one," Ray Allen said. "You see a situation you're in and you
step up big for your team. It can definitely cause a small fire [to turn
into] a blaze for him."
Rondo had been underwhelming in his consistency of late and for three
quarters was a non-factor. Last Friday, he was benched for much of the fourth
quarter in the loss to the Orlando Magic. Fortunately for Boston, he was on
the floor and in attack mode for tonight's final quarter.
"He has a gear, we would like him in that gear a little bit more," Rivers
said. "He picks and chooses and sometimes in the right way."
While Rondo was mystifying earlier in the game for routinely passing up short
shots, he owned the fourth. At one point penetrating the lane for three
consecutive layups followed by two assists, his aggressiveness was in stark
contrast to a first half in which Rondo, and the Celtics, were outplayed.
The half followed the troubling pattern of many Boston starts this season.
They scored just fine, but couldn't get stops. And they didn't finish the
stops they made, allowing 10 offensive rebounds in the half. At the break,
the Celtics held a one-point lead.
"They were making it an athletic contest and we weren't making it a physical
contest," Rivers said.
Just as other, less talented teams, have done with the Celtics, the 76ers
hung around with energy and offense. But unlike some of those teams, many of
which succumbed to third-quarter runs or scoring droughts -- due primarily to
Boston's defense -- the 76ers made a legitimate threat, withstanding a 10-2
Boston run in the fourth quarter.
And though the 76ers can thank Iguodala's 10 points in the final period for
that, their bench was what made those points relevant, combining for 43
points in the first three quarters --35 from Jason Kapono and Willie Green
combined.
"That's a credit to their professionalism, credit to the quality of
basketball players they are," Philadelphia coach Eddie Jordan said. "It got
physical and that was a special key for us that we couldn't back down,
couldn't be intimidated and we certainly were not."
Not many teams seem to be intimidated by the Celtics these days. In fact, as
with Philadelphia shooting well above its mediocre season percentages, many
are saving their best performances for Boston. Before, it was happening on
the road, the Celtics escaping Minnesota and New York and losing in Indiana.
But now, even at home, the Celtics seem to be relying more and more on
second-half surges.
But even with back-to-back games needing late-game heroics against sub-.500
record teams, a win is still a win. Right?
