The full interview given by chairman Buck

Lawyer Bruce Buck, the new chairman of Chelsea Village, gave his first
interview on Chelsea TV earlier this week. Much of it has been reported in
the media. Here is the full text of his interview.
He started by answering the question: Who are you?
“I sometimes wonder that myself. It’s been a long trip… a short
trip from East Upper Stand. I’ve been a Chelsea supporter for about… I
came to England in 1983 so I would say from about 1988. I’ve been a season
ticket holder for about 10 years, a Chelsea TV subscriber and I really
never thought I’d find myself in this seat. The way I got here is that
I’ve dealt with Siberian Oil, which is a company Mr Abramovich had a
significant interest in and I’ve done lots of transactions with
Mr Abramovich’s associates and when this transaction came along in June I
had the opportunity to participate. And it’s been very good fun ever since.”
Did you actually know him at that time, personally?
I met him in connection with the transaction, I knew who he was but I
had not actually met him before then.
You weren’t one of the original three directors, you were called in a
little bit later?
Correct, the three original directors were Eugene Tenenbaum, Richard
Creitzman and Eugene Schvidler, who was and is the president of Siberian
Oil. I think Eugene Schvidler realised that it was going to be quite a lot
of time involved in this project, particularly in the early months. And
with what is going on at Siberian Oil, with being involved in a big
transaction, he just did not have the time to spend on it and I was lucky
enough to come and take his place.
So how did they come to Bruce Buck?
I think you’ll have to ask Eugene Tenenbaum that. He’s the one that
called me on the Sunday morning and said he and Mr A had been talking about
it and would I like to be a director. And I thought about it for something
under one second and said yes.
Do you speak Russian?
I can get by in a restaurant, that’s about it.
So what is your relationship now with Roman Abromovich?
In connection with conversations with the directors generally, I am
involved in discussions on the bigger issues. He’s involved very closely
with what is going on with the club and Chelsea Village plc.
Let’s look at the plans for Chelsea Village because obviously that’s
what everybody is interested in and that’s what owns Chelsea Football club.
That’s what I’m interested in also. Well, today is the first day that
Peter Kenyon will be on the job. I think in the summer time when we were
talking about the future of Chelsea and the new Chelsea, it became very
clear that Mr A was going to invest a lot of money into this club and how
were we going to make this into, over time, a profitable venture? And it
became clear that what we have to do is have a successful football club and
on that build a successful brand image. We see Manchester United, it’s got
a very good brand that is reasonably well recognised around the world and
we think we can do that or better, largely because we are a London club.
