It's not finished yet
Thursday, Mar 25, 2004
The cat-and-mouse game played out on the pitch continued in the post-
match press conference last night with both managers trying to gain the
upper hand going into the second leg of this Champions League quarter-final
tie.
While praising Arsenal this season, Claudio Ranieri was quick to point
out the Blues excellent away form where, in the Champions League, we are
undefeated away and yet to concede a goal.
“Arsenal this season is in another world. We are behind them. They
score a lot of goals in every competition. Maybe they can score at Highbury
but Chelsea away is strong and I believe it is not finished yet. They are
the hypothetical champions in the League, maybe also in the Champions League
, but first they must kill us.”
Arsene Wenger is fully aware that his side, having scored a vital away
goal, will now go into the second game as favourites.
“My main worry is not whether we are favourites to go through,” he
said. “My main worry is to win the game at Highbury and we know we can do
that. To go for a 0-0 is a dangerous game. We have a good opportunity to go
through.
“We have the psychological edge certainly. You could see at 1-1 it was
a big blow for Chelsea because in the last 20 minutes I always felt that
there was enough room for us to win the game. To come back to 1-1 after
having been 1-0 down is a good result for us.”
Reflecting on the quarter-final first leg, the Frenchman admitted he
expected the Blues to play in a more defensive fashion than we had in this
season’s three previous encounters.
“Chelsea made it very difficult for us. They never opened the game up
completely because they were happy with a 0-0 for a long time and, of course
, when it was 1-0 they were very happy. We had always to change the game. It
was in my mind that Chelsea would play like this because every time we played
them they tried to chase us all over the pitch and we won. So I expected them
tonight to be more cautious.
“They played well, defended well. You could see that it was a European
Cup game because they played not to concede a goal. It’s very important at
home not to concede a goal. They tried to suck us in to get a break and to
score.”
On Eidur Gudjohnsen’s goal, did he feel his goalkeeper was culpable?
“Lehmann feels he is guilty because he came for the ball and he was
caught out by Gudjohnsen. Having seen it again on TV, I felt Gudjohnsen
played very well on the ball but the question is should he (Lehmann) have
come out or not for that kind of ball. We try to play very high and to get
him to take a high position as well. That’s one of the risks we take.
“The goal gave them a big lift and for us it was a big blow and we
needed to show character and patience to survive.”
The Blues’ head coach was full of praise for the Iceland striker’s
perseverance in chasing the ball which led to his goal.
“Gudjohnsen’s goal was for his determination,” he explained. “He
believed, he got the ball and scored a goal. After the goal, we had ten
fantastic minutes. We retook our confidence and played good football without
being anxious, with a free mind. Maybe we deserved to score the second goal.
“But then we concede a goal. It was a great reaction by the Arsenal
players and Pires scored a good goal.
“I think the match was good. I enjoyed it a lot. After this performance
my players are happy and I am happy. I am very pleased.”
After a particularly difficult and stressful week with the massive media
speculation surrounding his future, Claudio was appreciative for the wave of
support he received from the Chelsea faithful.
“I would like to say thank you to everybody for their support for me.
But I want their support only for Chelsea, only for my players, they deserve
it,” he humbly acknowledged. “The manager changes, the chairman changes,
Chelsea remain, that is important.”
