Mario’s next game was again at Wembley where this time he scored, against Manchester United in the Charity Shield, a happy habit he would later repeat at Old Trafford in another win. Despite his ability to also play in central defence or midfield, Mario settled into the right-back role, becoming the number one choice for that position over the next three seasons and graduating to international football for the first time. Last season he was faced with genuine competition for his place from 19 year -old Glen Johnson, eight years his junior and the two shared half-a-season each, Mario repeating a Champions League semi-final experience he had enjoyed in his early days at Ajax. In total he played 165 games for Chelsea, 16 coming on as a substitute and he scored five goals. Emmanuel Petit was signed by Claudio Ranieri in June 2001 as a proven champion, both at international and club level. He cost ￡7.5 million from Barcelona but sadly frequent injury problems prevented him ever gaining the midfield momentum he had last shown in opposition at Arsenal. His first season was his most active when in central partnership with Frank Lampard, Manu helped Chelsea to a losing FA Cup Final against his former employers. Still capable of games of total dominance in front of the defence , arguably his finest spell in blue was towards the close of his second season when he played through the pain barrier to make a big contribution to Champions League qualification. Last season was an injury nightmare though with just four games started and at the age of 33, he leaves the club having made 71+1 appearances with three goals scored. Winston Bogarde’s time at Chelsea is an unhappy tale. Signed after the sale of Emerson Thome for good money, the big defender with the big medal collection was brought over from Barcelona for no fee towards the end of the period when Gianluca Vialli and former managing director Colin Hutchinson were selecting new players. However when the club management set-up changed not long after, the Dutchman became less and less a player required and after 4+8 games spread over three seasons, he was no longer detailed for squad duties. The terms of his contract made a transfer unlikely so Winston, now 33, continued to train away from the first team until the last season of his contract came to an end.
