This historic event will be celebrated in a number of innovative and exciting ways with you, our supporters, participating fully. After much debate the club has nominated the 2005/6 season as the Centenary Year rather than the calendar year of 2005 itself. Many of you will know that 3 alternative dates in 1905 can be argued as the starting point for our 100 years: - on March 14 1905, Chelsea Football Club was founded at The Rising Sun pub (now The Greene Room) opposite today's main entrance to the ground on the Fulham Road; - on May 29, 1905, Chelsea was elected into the Second Division at the Football League AGM; - and on September 1, 1905, the first match took place away at Stockport County. The reason we have decided to officially make the Centenary Year the 2005/6 season is that it is the closest date to Chelsea's first match and 100 years since the club's first full season in 1905/6. However, we will also be recognizing the important milestones of the club's foundation in March and election to the League in May. Indeed the Centenary build-up starts now with this announcement. This will be followed by the first in a series of fan polls in the October edition of the Chelsea magazine to find Chelsea's Greatest Moment and, next month, a major announcement that we hope will have a huge impact on the club's identity for the next 100 years. An overall programme of events through 2005 and the 2005/6 season has already been drawn up with football as the centre piece. But people around the world recognize that the name Chelsea goes beyond football. It is synonymous with fashion, music and art and is part of the social history of not just our immediate home in Hammersmith and Fulham, but of London as a whole. The celebrations will also reflect this so there should be something for all ages and tastes to participate in. That word participation is the key. The Centenary Year would not be possible without you, our loyal fans, and we want to know what you think and what you want to see and do. Not everything will be possible but send us your ideas and we will consider them. There will also be a dedicated Centenary Year section on the club's website, chelseafc.com, soon. A Centenary Committee has been formed to oversee the whole project. This is packed full of personalities from the worlds of football, politics and business who have an intimate knowledge of Chelsea, as well as executives from the club. The members of the committee are Chelsea's life vice-president Lord Attenborough CBE; Tony Banks, Labour MP and fanatical Chelsea fan; Charles Trellogan, the Mayor of Fulham; Terry Venables, one of the club's most famous former players; Charles Dunstone, chief executive officer of Carphone Warehouse ; and Richard King, chairman of Chelsea Pitch Owners. The club is represented by; Bruce Buck, chairman; Peter Kenyon, chief executive ; Paul Smith, business affairs director; Alan Shaw, company secretary; and Simon Greenberg, director of communications. The committee met for the first time last Wednesday, before the match against FC Porto, and endorsed the concept that the Centenary Year should be the season of 2005/6. A number of sub-committees, or task forces, covering various areas of the Centenary will also be set-up to execute the wishes of the committee.
