http://www.sportinglife.com ZOLA HANDED SARDINIAN AWARD Cagliari striker Gianfranco Zola has received the Salvatore Mannironi award for his services to Sardinia. The 38-year-old former Italy international is the first sportsman to have won the prestigious award which is presented to individuals that have upheld the name of the Mediterranean island. "Zola is a rare example in Italian and world football of professionalism, seriousness and loyalty," read a statement from the board of selectors. "He is an example of a man that, perhaps aware of his exceptional natural gifts, has succeeded to show perseverance and hard work that has seen him reach the international summits in his career. "He has shown the typical qualities of Sardinians, that of sincerity, tenacity, dignity, the sense of family values, the value of friendship and of love for its people and for its island."
