The loyal Chelsea support, famed for following the team over land,
sea and Leicester, is set to become one of the most travelled groups of
fans in the country this coming season.
Calculations carried out by tyre company Continental on all 92
league clubs in England and Wales have estimated that the combined
mileage covered by Chelsea fans in supporting the team around the country
will only be surpassed by eight other clubs.
The analysis states that Chelsea supporters will total 17,268,000
miles. Not surprisingly, northern outpost clubs Newcastle and Sunderland
will clock up the biggest distances. The support of all 92 clubs
combined will travel over 800 million miles during the season — nine
times the distance between the earth and the sun.
The full travelling top ten is:
1 Newcastle 22,782,000 miles
2 Sunderland 22,272,000
3 Portsmouth 21,792,000
4 Middlesbrough 19,890,000
5 Swansea 19,388,000
6 Luton 18,032,000
7 Oldham 17,838,000
8 Rotherham 17,550,800
9 Chelsea 17,268,000
10 Tottenham 16,848,000
