The club is holding an anniversary dinner tonight to celebrate the occasion. The club had been formed on March 14th when the first board was established. An application for membership to the Southern League had been made. This was rushed and late, only pursued after Fulham had rejected the opportunity of playing home games at Stamford Bridge. As time went by the Southern League application did not appear to be making progress, so even later an application was made to leapfrog it and join the Football League. They were not so dismissive. The well known financier Frederick Parker visited the Football League office in Lytham in April 1905 and was told clearly: “Your club is trying to run with the hare and hunt with the hounds.” Chelsea thus withdrew the Southern League application and focused on the Football League. No team had arrived in the Football League without any previous experience. But Chelsea had financial stability, a fine ground and were signing up impressive players. Also, there was a lack of southern clubs in the League. At the London Tavistock Hotel on May 29th, the chairmen of the other clubs voted to elect Chelsea to the Football League. That hotel is no more, and on its site now stands the Royal Opera House. Just as Chelsea held the first centenary anniversary in the Butcher’s Hook pub, site of the establishment of the club in the Rising Sun in 1905, so tonight’s is being held at the Royal Opera House.
