It was a frustration unfortunately not new for the Finnish international. An all-round striker of power, precision, intelligence and total dedication, Mikael arrived at Chelsea as a 17 year-old free transfer who had been chased by big clubs across Europe. He exploded onto the Stamford Bridge scene with two stunning goals on his first start, against Oxford in the FA Cup. A maiden Premiership goal followed soon after and come the summer he was already a full international. Then a knee injury slowed the sprint start and the final third of his second season in England saw Mikael drop down a division on loan at Crystal Palace. He delivered a low return of three goals as it took time to recover and grow used to the hustle and bustle of it all. A full season at Palace followed as Chelsea looked to mature our bright young hope and after an initial loss of confidence, the player found his shooting boots and finished with 15 goals, quickly followed by his first two strikes for Finland, against Germany. Crystal Palace liked what they had seen enough to attempt a purchase but Chelsea’s first team squad came calling and in 01/02, Mikael found the net nine times, all after rising from the subs' bench. His shooting at times resembled premier striker of the time, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. Unfortunately in April another knee injury struck, denying a very good chance of playing a part in the 2002 FA Cup Final and it would be ten months before he would take to the field again, this time at German Bundesliga side Borussia Moenchengladbach. Not for the first time he won the hearts of his loan club, almost single-handedly rescuing them from relegation with nine goals in 12 games, the fans launching campaigns and collections to buy him. But the Premiership challenge was the real one and after a good pre-season it was on-loan at Birmingham that he would play his first full season, Chelsea by now rich and laden with Hasselbaink, Gudjohnsen, Crespo and Mutu. No-one was surprised when 19 goals followed, 17 in the Premiership (the fifth best total) but a second campaign at St. Andrew’s came to a premature end in September when more knee surgery was ordered. Returning to Chelsea for his recovery, the Birmingham loan was cancelled in January. Hopes were always there for Mikael to be back fit before the season's end, this avid student of the world’s most successful goalscorers having many years ahead in which to put himself amongst them. -- 足球不是一個生死問題,足球高於生死。 向死忠球迷致敬,唾棄叛徒。 -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 61.57.96.153
