Norwich City Reserves 2 Chelsea Reserves 2
Tuesday, Feb 21, 2006
Chelsea Reserves came from 2-0 down inside 20 minutes to draw and
nearly win a thoroughly entertaining encounter at Carrow Road last night,
Monday.
Norwich played the same 4-3-3 as Chelsea, and looked comfortable
despite being bottom of the Premier Reserve League. They took the lead
after ten minutes from a slightly fortuitous penalty.
Goalkeeper Pidgeley came for a corner, got a touch but failed to
collect, and dived again to claim the ball, diving into Henderson who fell.
The referee pointed to the spot and waved away the disbelieving Pidgeley's
appeals against the decision. Leon McKenzie calmly wrong-footed Pidgeley
from the spot.
Chelsea had a first sight of goal immediately afterwards, Jimmy Smith
finding James Younghusband in the area, but he was unable to find the time
to shoot before he was tackled.
Simon Charlton was doing a good fatherly job for Norwich on the left
of midfield, coaxing his young colleagues to make the right decisions.
Nineteen year old youth international Jarvis was one of them, playing on
the right of attack, and he chipped one cross that eluded everyone and
nearly finished in the back of the net, and then ran in on McKenzie's
cross after the experienced forward had gone past Grant and Dean Smith and
crossed low. His flick into the net was a quality finish.
Chelsea were two down and 17 minutes had gone.
Despite no centre-forward, Chelsea didn't look completely tame in
attack. Norwich made a meal of clearing one corner, and Jimmy Smith,
having been lucky to win a free-kick off Charlton's challenge, chipped it
over the wall from 22 yards and against the bar.
Mancienne and Pettigrew pushed on as much as possible to get attacks
going, especially with only one opposing striker. Jimmy Smith back-heeled
on one such foray to set up Simmonds but he was tackled in the box.
Chelsea lacked pace in attack.
But what the team didn't lack was heart, and captain Danny Hollands
put his side back in the match with a 25 yarder over the Norwich keeper,
slightly but not critically deflected, for his fourth goal of the season.
2-1, 27 minutes gone.
Some of Chelsea's passing was very good. Hollands found Sinclair with
a lovely floated pass, but the youth team goalscoring specialist couldn't
find the control or space to shoot.
Increasingly, Chelsea looked capable of penetrating again, but the
defence was never settled when Norwich went forward. It was exciting stuff.
Pettigrew was crucial when Jarrett ran through after midfield had been
taken out, and blocked the shot destined for goal.
The lower tier in the stand behind Pidgeley was packed, and there
were another thousand or so fans on the halfway line in the main stand. It
was a good atmosphere.
Chelsea deservedly equalised three minutes before half-time. Hollands
threaded a fine pass to Sinclair, and was then on hand when the resulting
cross was cleared to drive for goal. It was off target but hit Jimmy Smith
who managed to deflect it goalwards and in for his fifth goal of the season.
Before the interval, equality was nearly lost when McKenzie went
round Pettigrew and shot on the angle under the spreading Pidgeley whom
the referee said did not get a touch as the ball screwed just past the far
post.
Hollands started the second-half as he finished the first, with a
thumping left-fppted shot which experienced goalkeeper Gallacher did well
to turn round.
The referee gave Norwich a free-kick on the wide edge of the area
when McKenzie dummied past Mancienne but seemed to run the ball out of
play, and when it came in Hollands turned his back and the ball seemed to
strike his arm. He was maybe lucky there was no penalty.
It was already bitterly cold, and now rain cascaded down. Charlton
hit a free-kick from just outside the area well over, then McKenzie darted
behind the defence again and Pidgeley had to be quick off his line to
block. Next up Pettigrew and Pidgeley got in each other's way going for
the same ball with McKenzie. Chelsea will have been pleased nearly an hour
into the match to see McKenzie get substituted.
Mick McGiven sent on Shaun Cummings for Younghusband to take the
centre-forward role which injured Phil Younghusband had been unable to
fill. Simmonds moved out to the right.
Norwich substitute El Quargui headed wide when it would be easier to
score, and Norwich were having the best of the second-half. But Chelsea
kept battling and Hollands suffered the game's first booking for dissent
after a strong challenge which was harshly whistled.
Dean Smith was booked for kicking out at Henderson after the Norwich
player had grabbed his shirt and the free-kick wasn't given. The referee
was not helping the blue cause at this stage.
When Chelsea got nothing after Hollands had been clattered from
behind, Mick McGiven was furious on the touchline. The captain took all
his frustrations out on the ball ten minutes from time when he hammered
Cummings' touch back through a defender and against Gallacher's near post.
He was having maybe his best ever reserve game.
Cork replaced Grant for the final ten minutes, and Cummings immediately
robbed Shackell to run at goal, but like his fellow youth team striker
Sinclair didn't have the composure in the final third. Then Cork and Jimmy
Smith won the ball in Norwich's half, and Cork hammered a 25 yarder which
brought another desperate diving parry from Gallacher.
Bertrand was brought on at left-back for the two minutes of stoppage
time, so the reserves finished with four first year scholars: Bertrand,
Cork, Cummings and Sinclair.
