Chelsea Youth dominated play but lost to two breakaway goals in
the final 20 minutes in the first home Academy Under 19s game of the
season on Saturday.
Coach Brendan Rodgers said afterwards: “I was actually happy
that we played really well against a physically stronger Manchester
City team. The best team lost. We dominated possession which forced
them to put everyone behind the ball.
“At this early stage of the season we struggled a wee bit on
creativity, but that knowledge will grow during the season.”
A couple of efforts went close in the first-half and a couple of
chances were missed. Debutant substitute Lee Sawyer, the schoolboy who
did so well in the Northern Ireland Milk Cup, hit the bar in the
second-half. “While it was 0-0 there was always a chance for us,”
Brendan said.
But with 20 minutes to go the team threw a goal in defensively.
“Then we were pushing to get the equaliser and they scored a second
with two minutes to go.
“Performance-wise we didn’t do a lot wrong. We just need to be
more clinical or clever in the last third. We’ll play worse games
and win this season.”
Left-back Ryan Bertrand injured his hand in a fall and went to
hospital for an x-ray. It is believed the injury will not be serious.
