Chelsea left Coventry, who were in last season’s League Play-Off
Final with Blackburn, with a draw this morning, Saturday, but were
disappointed not to have won.
Lacking Jack Cork, Fabio Ferreira and Ricardo Fernandes, all away on
international duty, they took the lead through Shaun Cummings after 25
minutes. The speedy striker latched on to a mistake by the central defender
and goalkeeper and ran the ball home. But six minutes later a free cross
was delivered from the Coventry left and the equaliser scored.
Before half-time a penalty was harshly given when a shot from 20 yards
hit Sam Hutchinson who was covering himself, but debutant goalkeeper Rhys
Taylor dived to his right to smother the shot and make an excellent save.
In the second-half James Simmonds hit a fine shot after a terrific bit
of skill, but it struck the crossbar and popped out. There were bookings
for Taylor, James Younghusband and Lee Sawyer.
Manager Brendan Rodgers said: “This was another overall very good
performance against older opposition. We had a very good first-half when we
created chances as we moved the ball well. In the second-half we needed to
get our shots off much quicker than we did, but we still created enough
chances to win.
“We showed resilience towards the end against much more physical
opposition. Coventry were the runners-up last season in the National League
Play-off. We’ve now played two away games this season and shown up well in
both performances.”
