http://www.chelseafc.com/article.asp?hlid=309643 Watford Reserves 0 Chelsea Reserves 4 Wednesday, Sep 21, 2005 Chelsea sent out a few big guns against Watford at Vicarage Road and were rewarded with a convincing first reserve win of the season. If a team containing Wayne Bridge, Glen Johnson, Robert Huth and Carlton Cole didn’t look strong enough on paper, the late selection of Shaun Wright-Phillips for a half of action made it four full internationals supported by three current Under 21s. It was the most experienced reserve side for a long, long time. It was no surprise then to see Chelsea 3-0 up by the break with only a squandered penalty preventing the margin being greater. Amongst all the well-known names on display, it was pleasing to see 18 year-old Jimmy Smith open the scoring. Wright-Phillips had signalled his intentions by almost seeking out Cole with a wicked cross before a minute was even up and his delicate touch was crucial to the Smith strike, dabbing a Cole pass into the path of the young midfielder who finished first time across the goalkeeper. That goal came with just six minutes gone and it only took two more minutes to add a second. Cole was involved again, powering down the left and leaving his marker for dead before picking out Wright-Phillips, negligently left all alone to side-foot home. At that point you feared for the goal net but Watford stemmed the tide until a period of sustained pressure midway through the opening period was ended by a high illegal challenge on Smith in the box. Between Carlton Cole and a goal from the penalty spot stood James Beasant, nephew of former Chelsea keeper Dave, the man responsible for the most famous Cup Final penalty save in history. Genetics can claim an assist. Cole’s spot-kick was too close to the rookie keeper and he saved well. At the back, the concentration levels were high with Diarra again looking extremely comfortable in the Makelele role. But it was tough to gauge the performance level of the defence in this game. Feeding off mere scraps of possession, Watford failed to mount one serious attack. Instead Glen Johnson found a way to impress at the other end. The third goal was all about the right-back’s direct running, bursting between two players and skipping behind a third before Watford’s Adam Griffiths misjudged slide turned a low cross into the net with Cole ready to pounce. Johnson’s running would cause problems again, as did Wright-Phillips’ crossing although his run-out was restricted to 45 minutes, James Simmonds a second-half replacement. It didn’t take long for the 17 year-old to get involved, working a crossing opportunity that Cole headed high and wide. Cole looked dangerous throughout and deserved a goal. He went a lot closer with a firm header after Keenan had curled a ball over from the left and his reward finally came with 20 minutes to go. Strong in winning an aerial ball, the England Under 21 international chested and then unleashed a left-foot blast that Beasant failed to reach at his near-post. Huth had a chance for a headed fifth, meeting a Simmonds corner well but his aim was awry. Watford had played chase-the-ball nearly the whole game but on their side were young legs and it is to their credit that there was no sign of collapse in the final stages. Amongst all the fun of a few goals for Chelsea, probably the biggest plus to take from the game was Wayne Bridge still going at the end of 90 minutes, a few runs forward under his belt. First-team availability approaches. It is only fair to point out that Chelsea on the night faced a Watford side packed full of teenagers. It’s a situation our reserve coach Mick McGiven knows all too well, his teams having faced similar tough challenges on many occasions in the recent past.
